Fall Lawn Fertilizer in Ontario: Reading the Bag Before You Buy

The short answer

Early autumn is the last fertilizer window on OMAFRA's home-lawn calendar, which runs May to September and works in units of 0.5 kg of nitrogen per 100 m². Buy on the guaranteed analysis rather than the front of the bag, check any pesticide active ingredient against Ontario's Allowable List, and stop applying nitrogen roughly six weeks before the lawn stops growing.

Fall lawn fertilizer is the one lawn purchase where the label carries more information than the display it is sitting on. Ontario's own turf manual publishes a nitrogen rate for home lawns. Federal law fixes what the three numbers on the front of the bag have to mean. And the province decides separately whether a given lawn product may legally be used on a lawn at all. All three are readable in the aisle, in about two minutes, and they answer most of what a September purchase turns on.

Why September is on the calendar at all

September is the last month on OMAFRA's turf cultural practices calendar, and home lawns appear on it twice — once for fertilizer and once for aeration. The calendar runs May to September and works in a single unit for home lawns: 0.5 kg of nitrogen per 100 m². An irrigated home lawn is shown at that rate per month across the season. A home lawn with no irrigation system is shown getting that same 0.5 kg per 100 m² three times spread across the whole calendar rather than monthly, so the first thing to settle is which of those two rows describes your property.

The same publication is specific about what that nitrogen is doing. Studies cited in the manual's weed chapter, using fertilizer alone as the weed control tool, found weed cover could be reduced to under 5% by fertilizing with 0.5 kg of nitrogen per 100 m² four times a season for five seasons. The manual is equally specific in the other direction: too few nutrients leaves turf more open to weed infestation and some diseases, while too much fertilizer produces soft, weak grass that is prone to disease and will not stand up to traffic. Both failure modes are real, and the published rate sits between them.

That is the case for feeding in early autumn rather than in the heat. The grass is growing again, it is repairing summer damage, and the September rate on that calendar is the same 0.5 kg per 100 m² as the earlier ones. If your lawn went backwards in July and August, the mowing height you used through the summer is worth checking before you decide fertilizer is the missing piece.

What the numbers on the bag are legally required to mean

Fertilizer sold in Canada is regulated federally, and the CFIA's labelling memorandum sets out exactly which elements have to appear on a package. This is useful in the store because it tells you which parts of the bag are claims and which parts are guarantees.

Two practical consequences. First, a large first number means the product is concentrated: you spread less of it to deliver the same nitrogen. Second, the regulations define the grade and the guaranteed analysis, and those are the parts to compare between two bags. A phrase on the front such as "autumn formula" is not one of the defined elements, so it tells you nothing you can price.

Turning a percentage into an amount of product

This is the step that decides whether a bag is a fair price or an expensive one, and it takes about a minute on a phone. Nitrogen targets are given in kilograms of actual nitrogen, and the bag is mostly not nitrogen.

  1. Measure the grass area itselfPace the length and width of each grassed area and multiply. Subtract the driveway, the beds and the house footprint — you are feeding grass, so only grass counts. Do the front and back separately if they are different sizes, because they will need different amounts.
  2. Set the nitrogen targetAt 0.5 kg of nitrogen per 100 m², a 250 m² lawn needs 1.25 kg of actual nitrogen for one application. Scale directly: 400 m² needs 2 kg, 120 m² needs 0.6 kg.
  3. Divide by the first number on the bagA 20-0-5 product is 20% nitrogen by weight, so 1.25 kg of nitrogen means 1.25 ÷ 0.20 = 6.25 kg of product. The same lawn fed from a 10-0-5 bag needs 12.5 kg. Two bags at the same price are not the same purchase.
  4. Compare that against the label's own directionsThe directions have to state a rate, a frequency and a timing. If the bag's rate would put down two or three times the nitrogen the OMAFRA figure calls for, that is worth understanding before you spread rather than after.
  5. Spread in two passes at right anglesHalve the setting and cover the lawn twice in crossing directions. A single heavy pass is where striping and burn come from, and both are visible for the rest of the autumn.

Phosphorus and potassium — the second and third numbers — are a different decision. OMAFRA's calendar note is one line and does not hedge: P and K rates are to be established by a soil test. Nitrogen cannot be soil-tested usefully, which is why a published rate exists for it and not for the other two. Buying a bag with a high middle number without a test result is buying a nutrient the lawn may already have.

What the law decides about weed and feed in Ontario

A bag that fertilizes and kills weeds in one pass is two products, and the second one falls under a different law. Ontario's Pesticides Act and Ontario Regulation 63/09 ban the cosmetic use of pesticides on lawns, gardens, patios and driveways. A pesticide may be used cosmetically only if the use falls under an exception to the ban, or the active ingredient appears on the province's List of Active Ingredients Authorized for Cosmetic Uses — the Allowable List.

The province names 2,4-D, diazinon and glyphosate among the ingredients that cannot be used for cosmetic purposes, and gives borax, corn gluten meal, soap and sulphur as common household examples of what is allowed. The current Allowable List is Version 5, effective 28 November 2022, and the ministry adds and removes ingredients periodically, so the version on the province's page is the one that counts on the day you buy.

  2. Read the common name in the guaranteeYou are looking for a chemical name in the guarantee, such as 2,4-D, rather than the product's marketing name. A product may contain more than one.
  3. Check every named ingredient against the Allowable ListOntario's rule is that the pesticide must contain only active ingredients that appear on the list. One ingredient off the list takes the whole product off a home lawn.

The date to stop, and the damage that shows up after snowmelt

This is the part of autumn feeding that is easy to get wrong in the other direction. OMAFRA's management advice for both grey snow mould and pink snow mould says the same two things: minimize thatch, and prevent soft growth going into late fall by mowing until leaf growth stops and not applying nitrogen any later than about six weeks before dormancy. Nitrogen put down too late produces exactly the lush, soft tissue that is still sitting there when the snow arrives.

Both diseases reach ordinary lawns, not only golf turf. All cool-season turfgrasses can host pink snow mould, and for grey snow mould the manual lists creeping bentgrass, annual bluegrass and perennial ryegrass as particularly susceptible, with Kentucky bluegrass, red fescue and tall fescue moderately susceptible. The same manual describes Kentucky bluegrass as used extensively for home lawns, so a residential lawn is on the list either way. The symptoms only appear after snowmelt, as circular bleached or scalded patches up to about 30 cm across, so the application and the damage sit five months apart on the calendar.

Dormancy has no fixed calendar date in the GTA, and a date invented here would be less reliable than what you can see on the lawn. The trigger is the grass: keep cutting while it is still growing, note the week the clippings stop filling the bag, and count six weeks back from when that normally happens on your property. Two more autumn items sit in the same guidance — rake leaves off the turf, and avoid heavy topdressings late in the season. Keeping a regular cut going until growth stops is the part of this that has to happen every week rather than once.

What you can skip buying

  • Some of the nitrogen. Mulching mowers that leave the cuttings on the turf have been shown to replace up to 15% of the nitrogen fertilizer required, and the clippings do not build thatch. The manual's one caveat is cool, wet spring conditions when growth is rapid — which is an argument for leaving them in autumn.
  • Phosphorus and potassium you have not tested for. The soil test is the instruction, and accredited labs in Ontario are listed in the same publication.
  • A dethatching machine, before you check the cause. Thatch builds on established turf that is over-watered and over-fertilized. A moderate layer is described as beneficial: it insulates roots from temperature extremes, reduces water loss, and cushions the surface against compaction. Fix the watering and the feeding first.
  • A second product for seeded areas. If you seeded in late August, the first four weeks after seeding already set what those patches need, and adding a herbicide-bearing product over new seedlings undoes the work. Overseeding itself is timed to the late-summer window rather than to the fertilizer schedule.

When this is worth hiring out, and when it is not

Spreading fertilizer on a front lawn is a short job with a rented or borrowed spreader, and the arithmetic above is the hard part of it. Do it yourself. Fertilizer application is not one of the services listed on this site, so there is nothing being sold in this paragraph: the measuring, the label reading and the two crossing passes fit inside an afternoon.

The parts of autumn lawn care worth handing over are the ones that need repetition or a machine. Mowing has to continue while the grass is still growing, which in a mild autumn means cuts well after the mower would normally be put away, and that cadence is what the snow mould guidance depends on. Aeration is the other: the same OMAFRA calendar puts two aeration passes a year on home lawns, and the manual gives the reasons as relieving compaction, improving water infiltration, increasing oxygen in the soil profile and breaking down thatch. Both are labour rather than a purchase, which is why neither appears on a shelf in September.

It depends entirely on the pesticide it contains.
